What's it like to be an IT Technician?
Information Technology (IT) Technicians are computer experts who provide IT support to users. They install and configure new software and hardware, respond to support requests and ensure the optimal performance of computers through ongoing maintenance.
Tasks and duties
- Responding to incoming requests for support.
- Determining software or hardware solutions to problems.
- Ensuring correct and efficient use of software and hardware.
- Communicating with customers in person, over the phone and via email.
- Downloading, installing and configuring new software and performing software updates.
- Installing, repairing and maintaining hardware and peripheral equipment such as monitors, routers and modems.
- Providing ongoing coaching and tuition to users.
- Maintaining records of actions taken.

How to become an IT Technician
It is possible to work as an Information Technology Technician without formal qualifications; however, most employers prefer candidates with qualifications in information technology.
